Canada: Leading the World With Our Middle Class!

globeandmail.com: The secrets of Canada's world-leading middle-class success

Apparently Canada is among the elite nations of the world when it comes to a large and growing middle class. This is something that I would suggest is the product of progressive policies in both Canada and the US, circa 1995 - 2000 or so. The Clinton years were extremely good times economically speaking in the US, and Canada certainly benefited from the strength of the US economy in that time. Add the Chretien-Martin (before PM the PM) years of fiscal restraint and balanced budgets and moderate tax cuts to that equation and we saw a significant uptick in the size of our middle class.

Good stuff. I wonder if the "hate Canada first" crowd has anything to say about this. Our way works, there is no reason we need to be parroting and mimicking the US.

Well, with the Harper republican/conservative party this won't last.

It's showing already.

Obviously, it's better when the US has a Democrat president and Canada has a Liberal PM.

Just look at the debts Reagan and Mulroney built up.

Having just moved from Ontario to Quebec, I think it would be interesting to aply the same model between provinces. There is way too much tax money spent here on, "free" entertainment, going nowhere make work jobs and unnecesary social programs that cripple the provinces economy with debt and high taxes while encouraging people to be poor. In my humble opinion Quebec needs a round of really serious cut backs, increased workload and decreases in "free" services and entertainment paid for by the ROC, are drastically needed here before the debt is insurmountable.

Oh yeah, the constant begging for handouts from the R of C when you see what they do with the money here is really hard to take.
