What is the Liberal message against Jack?
Received some thoughtful responses to my posting yesterday and I hope to follow-up on some of those points yesterday.
Here's another campaign question: What is the Liberal message against Jack Layton? More specifically, what is a Liberal candidate's local message when challenging an NDP incumbent?

Simple.
On day one of the campaign, Jack Layton took the podium and announced for the first time that he was (a) running against Harper and (b) running to be Prime Minister.
Which means last time around, his campaign was simply about killing child care, Kelowna and Kyoto.
Progressive Canadians can blame Jack Layton for the direction of this government. He chose to put them in office, and chose to bring a premature end to the most socially progressive government that Canadians have seen or had in a generation. That is a decision he made, and that he and his sheep MPs must live with.
Start there.
I'll have more for you tomorrow.
Depends on the riding. My MP is NDP, but he is nonresponsive to his constituents and hasn't done anything for the local community, so I would hope his competition would attack him on his personal record.
More generally, Layton and the NDP oppose a carbon tax, preferring that we wait the years necessary to get a cap and trade up and working. There are arguments to be made about efficiency of the two systems, but even without getting into that detail, if one really cares about the environment, you know you need to act NOW, not in several years. Also, Layton's cap and trade has money for retrofits and infrastructure, but there is no money simply to pay the bills. Either cap and trade or carbon tax raises the cost to consumers and particularly hurts low-income. The Green Shift recognizes this in their tax credits and tax cuts. The NDP plan does not.
In addition, there are other arguments, such as the Liberal party has proven strength on managing the economy, etc.
